Evaly: Russell and Shamima sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment for embezzlement

A court has sentenced e-commerce firm Evaly CEO Mohammad Russell and his wife Shamima Nasreen to 1 year imprisonment in a money embezzlement case.  

On Sunday (June 2), 7th Joint Metropolitan Judge at Chattogram, Md. Mohiuddin's court gave this verdict. Advocate MS Hossain Shahed, assistant public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the verdict to BanglaNews.

The court also sentenced the plaintiff's lawyer, Advocate Shahriar Yashir Arafat Tanim, Evaly's CEO Mohammad Russell and his wife Shamima Nasreen, the company's chairman, to 1 year imprisonment in a money embezzlement case. At the same time, the court imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh 80 thousand equivalents to the check. The accused are absconding at the time of the verdict. The court has issued an arrest warrant against them based on the warrant. 

According to the case documents, Jasim Uddin Abid, a resident of Hamzarbagh area of ​​Panchlaish police station in Chattogram city, paid Tk 1 lakh 80 thousand to Evaly in April 2021 to buy a motorcycle. But Evaly did not hand over the motorcycle. Evaly issued a check but the check was bounced by the bank. Jasim Uddin Abid, the victim of this incident, filed a case against Evaly CEO Mohammad Russell and Chairman Shamima Nasreen in Chattogram Court on October 2, 2021 as a plaintiff. On September 16, 2021, Russell and Shamima were arrested from their residence in Mohammadpur of the capital in a case of fraud and embezzlement. Shamima was released on bail in April 2022. Russell was released on bail on December 19, 2023.
